A month ago I was explaining to Jeff that I was researching which Christmas picture books I wanted to read and putting them on hold, then suspending the hold until November 26, so that I could pick them up on the last day of the holding period and have them exactly the three weeks before Christmas, avoiding any need to return before the holiday. He rolled his eyes and said I always insist I'm bad at math and logistics, but apparently not because I excel at what he calls "library math".

I do this for other holidays and seasons as well, although none feels quite as competitive as Christmas. I know it may seem a bit extreme - is the perfect picture book really going to make our holiday/season that much better?

But it really does! We read a lot together in this house, and certain books really do seem to influence the way we talk about and approach a season together, or give us inspiration for things to do together.

We checked out a lot of books this fall and I wanted to share our top 5 favorites (Annika and I decided on these 5 together, so they are parent and child approved)! As much as we love the library we also enjoy building our own home library, and these five are now on our list to buy someday.

First, let's talk about a large theme in fall children's picture books that I was previously unacquainted with: the 'animals/trees have never experienced fall before and don't know how it works' trope. There are a surprisingly large number of books that explore this topic, and three of them made our top 5 this year.

1 - Fletcher and the Falling Leaves by Julia Rawlinson

Fletcher is the most darling little fox who is so worried about his favorite tree losing its leaves, and tries various methods to stop this from happening. I love the illustration style in this book (by Tiphanie Beeke), and the last page (spoiler alert) shows the tree covered in glittery icicles, with actually glitter on the page. Annika's actual response was "WOW!" the first time we read it.

2 - Little Tree by Loren Long

This book has such a sweet message about letting go and moving on that I found inspiring. Again we have a character who doesn't know about fall, a little tree who holds tight to his leaves because he's scared to let them go. I really liked the message of this book for myself, as well as for Annika.

3 - Sneeze, Big Bear, Sneeze! - by Maureen Wright

We read this book last year and liked it so much I knew we needed to check it out this year, too. Bear does try to nail the leaves back onto the tree, but his bigger problem is that he thinks his sneezes are making fall happen, when it's actually the autumn breeze. We laughed a lot at this story.

4 - Yellow Time by Lauren Stringer

I happened to see this one on a library display and grabbed it, and I'm so glad I did. The illustrations are gorgeous and we have started using the phrase "yellow time" when we see trees full of yellow leaves. The kids in the book also press leaves in a book at the end, which inspired us to do the same.

5 - Wild Child by Lynn Plourde

This was Annika's favorite fall book. The illustrations are just lovely, very colorful and imaginative. It's full of fun descriptive phrases that stick with you - "skitter scatter, acorns splatter" and "plumpy lumpy pulpy pumpkins".

Fall is almost over, so hopefully all this year's baby animals have figured it out and come to terms with leaves falling off trees.
Last year around this time I made my first Coffee and Thread pattern, the cub's birthday dress. This year I was thrilled to be asked to participate in a blog tour for their newest pattern, the Nina Blouse! Find a discount code (20% off) near the end of this post!

This little blouse has the sweetest little tucks up by the shoulders, and plenty of options. Long sleeves, short sleeves, rounded collar, scalloped collar and sleeves, etc. I found this darling little floral fabric at Fabric Place Basement and right away envisioned exactly what I wanted to make, and just how I wanted her to wear it - with this pleated suspender skirt that I wore when I was a child, and I believe my own mother wore as well! This turned out exactly how I had first pictured it, but it wasn't without a hiccup or two along the way.

I adore the little scalloped shape on the sleeves and collar, and knew I wanted to do that option. Then I decided that I really wanted to have piping along the edge of the collar and sleeves, to help really define those shapes and not have them get lost in the print of the fabric. Then I tried to pipe them and realized I had no idea how to do piping along a scalloped edge, or if it was even possible (it didn't seem like it)! I was baffled, defeated, and texted my sewing bestie late one night to complain that I have no idea how to sew, everyone in the world besides me probably knows you cannot pipe on a scallop, my Nina was doomed, etc. etc. Late night sewing = more drama. ;)

At first I thought I would just have to change to the basic collar and sleeve shapes, but I really wanted to use the scallops. In the morning I re-examined the problem, and consulted google. I found this wonderful tutorial on piping scallops which was so helpful! I piped on my collar, and it was SO much better, though not perfect still. By the time I finished the second sleeve things were looking even better, so I decided to go ahead and cut another collar and redo that. I remember reading somewhere that when doing a new sewing technique you should really practice at least 10 times before doing your actual garment. That is excellent advice which I should follow. My second collar was a much better attempt than the first, and I'm so happy I redid it.

The rest of the blouse came together easily. The binding on the armholes and neckline makes the inside look so nice. I did french seams on the sides, as well. I really like patterns that help me not feel bad for not having a serger!

If you'd like to make your own Nina, grab the pattern here and use the code 'ninapatterntour' for 25% off!

This little top paired perfectly with my vintage skirt, just like I hoped. She looks darling!

I am so excited to be participating in a blog tour for Pm-Patterns. I tend to really love European patterns, I find a lot of them have that classic look and clean lines that I am drawn to for dressing the cub.

Before I jump into my long-winded (and photo heavy) monologue about this darling top I'm going to first tell you that there is a giveaway to with a pattern down at the bottom of this post! So make sure you get down there somehow to enter. Even if that means scrolling right past everything else. (I always think I shouldn't post quite so many pictures, but then we get so many nice ones that I just can't help myself.)

Choosing which pattern I wanted to make was easy because the Colombine top/dress is just soooo good, but the hard part was figuring out what I actually wanted to do with it! I went back and forth between doing a nice, warm dress or a summer-y top. I even bought a beautiful cotton flannel that looks a lot like wool to make a dress with, then finally decided to do a top since we should hopefully be having nice weather soon, and I figured I could make the dress next fall. Of course our weather has been so cold and wet that I probably could have sewn up the dress and had her get plenty of wear out of it after all! Oh, well. I made a beautiful summer-y top and even if she is having to layer a shirt underneath it for now this winter cannot last forever!
I sewed up the top version with the ruffles. The ruffles took a bit of time to get pinned on nicely, but it was well worth the effort. Plus I did it while catching up on Project Runway: Allstars, so again, time well spent.

I tried a few new-to-me tricks for this project. One, this PDF pattern comes with a copy shop sized file, so I had it printed at Fed-Ex and saved myself all of the trimming and taping. This was so. worth. it. I wish every pattern came with this option, because it saves me so much time (and time is not something I have a lot of when it comes to sewing).

To push myself I used my narrow hem foot to hem the ruffles. It went...as it usually does. I started the first one, sewing at the most glacial pace ever. Stitch. Stitch. Stitch. I started getting self-congratulatory in my head, thinking Wow! See, practice really does help you get better! Look at how good these are looking! I can do this! Toward the end of the first ruffle I started getting a bit overly confident and picking up some speed. Stitch stitch stitch. Stitch stitch stitch. Then suddenly I realize I've lost it and it's only folding over once, instead of twice. I get back on track and slow down. I finish. Woohoo! Next ruffle. Stitch. Stitch. Stitch. I start to go faster. My mind starts to wander. I'm thinking about what I'm going to make for dinner, or wondering where the cub is and if she's being too quiet (which usually means mischief). I finish the ruffle and realize I lost the double fold like three times throughout. Very small sections, at least! 😑 Oh well. Overall it was better than lots of my attempts and I'll just keep practicing.

The other new thing I did was to use a decorative machine stitch on the edge of the ruffles. My sweet mother-in-law surprised me at the end of last summer with a new sewing machine, The Rachel by Babylock. I feel like I'm still learning about all of the things this machine can do, including it's 50 different stitches. To be completely honest, I'd never really cared for the look of decorative machine stitches. I love hand embroidery, and I feel like it loses some of that charm when done by machine. But when I saw the decorative stitch options on this machine I realized I could see myself actually using some of them. I still had to really push myself to actually go for it on this project, though. I was worried I'd get them on there and completely regret it! My material has a very subtle stripe, so I chose a stitch that had a blocky shape to go with that. I practiced with slightly different thread colors on scraps first, and finally committed to my ruffles (reassuring myself at the same time that I could cut new ones if I hated it). I ended up really loving the result, though, so they stayed!

I decided to add a placket to the back of this top. I did this purely because it reminded me of The Geranium dress with a slightly higher waistline, and I've found I have to add a placket onto that pattern in order to not make getting the cub in and out of the dress/top not be a total fight. However, this top definitely does not need a placket and I won't be adding one in the future.

I have a few sewing goals for this year, and one of them is to sew a big dent in my fabric stash. Jeff gets really excited when I mention this, so I'm really trying for his sake. So everything on this top was already in my sewing bin! The fabric was formerly a sheet and the buttons were some that I had picked up on clearance a while ago. They aren't a perfect color match but I let the cub choose and she likes them a lot, which was exactly what I assumed would happen when I bought them.
I'm participating in the January Sewing by Ti Blog Tour, which was a challenge to make something new, so here we go!

I have always loved doing hand embroidery, and while I've dreamed of beautiful hand embroidered dresses I haven't yet really brought my love for embroidery and love for sewing together in a project. So here is something new for this year, and hopefully it will be followed by many projects that incorporate the two together!

Last October my aunt called me up and invited me to go to Sweden with her, and it was an amazing trip in so many ways. One of my favorite parts was when we went out exploring in the woods and found toadstools that looked to be straight out of an Elsa Beskow book (if you haven't read her sweet stories you should do so, especially with children). We found lots of interesting mushrooms, but my favorite were the red ones.
I used the Toadstool Village pattern from Twig and Tale to recreate a little of the magic to send as a thank you gift to my aunt. It was such a fun sew, quite simple and quick apart from the embroidery (and I love to sit and do that sort of work). I used some bits and pieces of felted wool sweaters I had left over from past projects, and put black beans in the bottom to help it stand on its own.

One day on our trip my Morfar (mother's father) was helping repair my great-uncle's mailbox, and they were trying to decide what color to paint it. My aunt and I suggested yellow, and the look on my great-uncle's face was one to remember. So I had to add a little yellow mailbox onto the toadstool in tribute!

I managed to make a second project from the Nutcracker Christmas fabric I provided with as a Sewing Portfolio Ambassador! (First project here) This gorgeous Nutcracker fabric is from Sarah Jane's Nutcracker Act 1 line by Michael Miller, and I'm obsessed with all of it. I've seen so many darling dresses made from different fabric combinations from this line that I've saved for inspiration for next year.

I actually was ahead of the game for once and had this dress done at the beginning of the month, just in time for us to go see The Nutcracker at a local ballet school. The cub has since worn it several places - Christmas parties (including her own here at our house), church, Nutcracker story time at the library. It's nice to get so much wear out of the Christmas dress!

I made the Georgia pattern from Violette Field Threads in a size 3. I added a little bit of fullness to the skirt, I think it was about 4 or 5". I only used three buttons down the back and think it could have used another one at least, maybe even two because it tends to pull open a little right at the top of the placket (I really should add a hook and eye now, but I seem to have a hard time going back to work on a project I thought was finished). The gold buttons were ones I already had in my box, which is why there were only 3.

I really wanted to have the ruffles at the neck and sleeves be solid, but was having a hard time finding exactly the right blue. Finally the obvious dawned on me - I just used the wrong side of the fabric! Perfect color.

It's so sweet on her, especially when I can convince her to let me put her hair in a bun (or a "hair donut" as we call it, since the piece we use inside is called a hair donut and she thinks that is so funny).

For several months now my husband has been asking me when I'm planning to sew something for him. We'd even looked through a few patterns, but nothing had really stood out to either of us, so I continued just making things for the cub.

But then Twig and Tale came out with their Trailblazer Vest in Men's sizes, and I knew that finally the time had come. This pattern is awesome, such a classic design with some nice variations (wind flap, snaps/buttons/zipper, even a fisherman add on) and is something my husband will actually wear. Best of all there is a matching kids' version, so the two of them can match!

Michael Miller provided beautiful fabrics for me to work with, and I chose this beautiful pine green cotton couture fabric for Jeff's vest. For the cub's I decided to go with a print, and their Say Yes to New Adventures from their Words of Wisdom line is the perfect mix of sweet and spunky! We love the little tree doodles.

What really makes the vests is the lovely organic sherpa, also from Michael Miller. It is so incredibly soft. The cub loves to touch the inside of her vest and says, "It feels like a kitten, or a blanket." I hesitated just a little cutting into it because I wanted to just wrap myself up in it and take a nap! It still looks beautiful after being washed and dried (a must when a toddler is wearing it).

This was my first time using a separating zipper, but Lisa's instructions (and video!) make it a complete breeze. Every time I do a zipper I wonder why I don't do them more often, they really aren't hard to do when you have good instructions! I actually think the hardest thing about zippers is finding the right color for your project.

I quilted both of the vests (more on the smaller vest, because quilting is so new to me and it seemed more doable on something small!) onto a thin wool batting for extra warmth, since we are starting to see our temperatures drop. I also added a little color blocking on the cub's vest, so you can really see the nice seams there that help give these vests a nice shape (nothing boxy here!)

These two are such pals, especially since I went to Sweden without them in October. Came back to find that perhaps they don't actually need me after all, they were so on top of things! Hopefully they enjoy having me around, at least.
The cub is such a satisfying person to sew for right now. She seriously loves this vest, and tells me so all the time. When I first put it on her she went over to the mirror and was looking at herself with the most satisfied little smile, it was so cute. Makes finishing something extra rewarding!

The cub and I were flying this summer together, and a few weeks before the trip it dawned on me that since she was now old enough to need her own seat, she was also old enough to carry on her own little bag. That way she could carry some of her own snacks, books, etc. At last some of that space in the diaper bag will be filled up for me to stick in my own snacks and books!

I pulled out my copy of "Little Things to Sew" from Oliver + S and used the backpack pattern found in there. I've read reviews of this backpack being a little small, but once I put it on the cub I found it was the perfect size for her little 2-year-old body. Anything thing bigger would probably knock her over. I didn't add any of the penguin details, instead I used some beautiful Michael Miller Sarah Jane Sommer canvas fabric I had on hand (was earmarked for a different project, we'll see if I'll have enough left or need to buy more now!) and a remnant of solid pink canvas I had picked up somewhere a few years ago. I love love love the Sommer fabric line, but this is the first thing I've actually made with any of the fabric! I lined the inside with a yellow cotton.

Honestly, I'm a little amazed that I made this. It looks really good and I don't think it screams homemade. I did want to try to add a water bottle pocket on the side, but I was intimidated and figured I needed to try just following the instructions as written first, since I've never made anything like this. I would highly recommend this pattern, especially to anyone who is brand new to bags (like me)!

Luckily the cub loves it, she looks so cute wandering around in it. It was used on the airplane, and after we returned from our trip she started preschool one day a week and has been taking it there, too. I think I should be able to just throw it in the washing machine (I hope?) which it's going to need sooner rather than later.

She styled herself for these photos, adding on the sunglasses, hat, and boots. The girl has style.

This is for a darling little girl named Violet, and perhaps this color is more lavender, but the little embroidered flowers are meant to be violets. Being named after a flower myself I appreciate using little flower motifs to personalize instead of tacky personalized keychains (especially as I have never found one with my name on it).

The shoes are Twig and Tale's Wayfarer shoes, which are simply perfect for embellishing with embroidery. I love the little ribbon tags to assist in putting them on. Just darling.

The bonnet is the Storybook Woods bonnet by Alicia Paulson. I love the shape of this bonnet and plan to make many more. I made it so it is technically reversible, though I can't imagine not wanting those sweet little flowers showing.

The little dress is the Geranium dress by Made By Rae. This has become my go-to dress for baby gifts, it is so quick and comes together nicely. I did a little fabric treatment to the bodice to make a little tucked chevron design. My original plan was to do a chevron tuck design like I did for a baby dress last year, but my thread didn't match as well this time and I ended up deciding I liked the back side of my tucked pieces instead, so I decided to make it work and went with it! The fabric is a linen blend, it is very soft and I like the feel of it. I used the same cotton print to line the dress bodice and the inside of the little shoes.

This was a bit of a labor of love with the embroidery, but very worth it. I love the end result.

I made everything 3-6 month size, so I hope it all fits around the same time!
I have been so fortunate to have made these friends, they are the best support and I am a better mother because of them.

I decided to make each of them a pair of baby shoes, because after making the embroidered wayfarer shoes I was really eager to try the Wild Things version, also by Twig and Tale. I loved choosing a different animal for each of them and fabrics. Projects like these are exactly why I can never seem to convince myself to get rid of my scraps, because they just take a tiny little bit!

I chose to make:

Panda bears
The cub loved these and kept trying to put all them on herself. She has requested a pair, although she keeps changing her mind on which animal she wants. I'm looking forward to trying to make some in her size, all these tiny little baby shoes have been so small and finicky.

Our baby sprinkle was a lot of fun, too. It was Gator themed and we had it at a local donut shop (YUM).

In early May we went down South to Florida and then up to Charleston for a few days. I was figuring out what clothes the cub would need for the trip (and for summer in general) and figured hey, going to the South? Let's do as the southerners would do and add some smocking to our wardrobe.

I used the Ice Cream Top/Dress pattern from Oliver + S and followed a honeycomb smocking tutorial that I found on their blog. The tutorial is by S is for Sewing, who sews the most lovely things for her daughter. When I first found her blog I spent forever going back through all her posts, her style is just so beautiful and reading her "why" about why she makes clothes for her daughter really resonated with me. Reading her blog actually really helped push me into this journey of making clothes for the cub!

Honeycomb smocking was surprisingly easy, and really looks darling. I used yellow embroidery floss to add a little pop of color on this shirt.

I did add length to the pattern, I generally find I need to add a few inches onto any Oliver + S top pattern to get the fit I'm after.

She's worn this a ton, so here are a few random photos -

This was actually trying to get an official blog picture, but she could see the park and only stood here for maybe twenty seconds, and then I realized she had spilled something on the shirt earlier that day...plus it needed pressing...oh well!

I used a cotton fabric I had picked up a long time ago at Hancock, it's light and airy which makes it perfect for summer. I wish I had more of it!

I also made a pair of Puppet Show Shorts (also from Oliver + S) to go with the top. I cut up a pair of navy linen pants I had decided to get rid of and added some blue piping. I made her the 6-12 size because that was where her waist measurement fell, added some length, but I think I should have just sized up in general because these seem a little bit small on her. This is a cute pattern though and and I'd like to make more.
I'm delighted to be participating in a blog tour for Duchess and the Hare, and also excited to tell you that there is a giveaway along with it! More on the giveaway at the bottom of this post - but first, allow me to show off a darling dress.

I chose to make the Petit Four dress, which has two different bodice options. I chose the scallop and love how it mirrors the scalloped border at the bottom of the skirt. The pattern suggests hand stitching the scallops onto the bodice, so that your stitching it invisible. I think that was such a nice touch, and I actually don't mind sitting down with a needle and thread for a bit (as long as I'm not in a rush).

This dress also has a zipper in the back, which I'm usually a little scared of but it was a good reminder that I shouldn't be afraid of zippers, it was easy and it actually makes dressing the cub super easy. The fit on this dress is spot on for my daughter, which really impressed me. I will certainly be making this pattern again.

Here you can see the dress options -

I originally found some beautiful fabric online that I was so excited about, but a few days after I ordered it they emailed to say it was out of stock. I was really, really sad - it was combined with an already hard week, and I was definitely overly upset about it. That night I tried the thrift store and lucked out, found a dress that had a similar look to it. Bonus of the scallop bottom fabric is no need to hem! The white yoke and bodice back are actually from a curtain, also from the thrift store. I'm still disappointed about not getting the other fabric, but happy with how this turned out.

I chose pink specifically because my daughter has been requesting a pink dress. While I was working on it the other day she came over and watched for a minute, then we had the following conversation:

"What are you doing?"
"I'm making you a dress. Do you like it?"
"No."
"I thought you wanted a pink dress."
"I need a pink sparkly one."
"I don't have any pink sparkly fabric."
"It's just at the store. We can go get some."

It made me laugh really hard, her favorite aisle at Joann is the special occasion aisle with all the sparkly fabrics, so I know exactly what it is that she is after. Fortunately she does like this dress and there is no fight to get it on her!

I have a sweet new niece who shares her name with a beautiful flower, so I've been working on a special gift for her.

(Which of course means that I meant to have this done before she was born, but instead it has been a slow work-in-progress. But the shoes are done, and the dress and bonnet will hopefully be soon. Let's just say I'm glad I decided to make it in a 3-6 month size!)

I used the sweet little Wayfarer Shoes pattern by Twig and Tale, and I actually was so surprised at how easily these sewed up. It was so fast! Well, it was fast once I first finished the embroidery...ha. I freehanded the embroidery pattern, and I did it before cutting the toe piece out.

I used an old blouse of mine for the top part of the shoe (the ivory swiss dot) and the rest of the shoe is done in a light purple linen blend.

This pattern suggested doing little folded ribbon tags at the backs of the shoes to help get them on and off. For some reason this little detail is just the sweetest thing to me. I think it helps give them an extra touch and make them look a little more professional.

Now that I know how simple these shoes are to make I have more planned as baby shower gifts. There is a cute animal version as well which I'm excited to try (here)! Thankfully these patterns aren't just for babies either, so I'm planning a few pairs for the cub, too.
I actually love doing embroidery and wish I did more of it. Doing this was relaxing and reminded me that I need to set aside time every now and then to do some needlework.

However, we planned a trip to take our Sesame Street-loving girl to Sesame Place, and I couldn't help but start thinking about a Sesame Street dress. None of the fabric I saw really grabbed me though, and then I started thinking about using a sheet, but had a hard time picturing it. Then someone posted a dress in one of the sewing groups I'm in on Facebook using the exact sheet I had been looking at, and I loved it. (I can't find her shop name now, but it was a custom order she did for a client.)

So forward I went, and made my first character dress. The cub loves it and asks to wear it all the time. She's really upset if I have to tell her it is dirty.

I used the geranium pattern, used the collar from the expansion pack but extended it into a long sailor-ish collar (I made the modification using the Oliver + S building block dress book). I added piping at the waist. I made the skirt a little fuller to fit more characters on, but sort of wish I hadn't because they get a little lost in the fullness.

It was absolutely perfect for our trip to Sesame Place, and people were commenting on it all day long. I thought it was so clever until one woman told me she has those sheets, then I felt a little silly (until Jeff pointed out that just means she has super old sheets and needs new ones).

<strike>A few pictures</strike> Lots of pictures from our day at Sesame Place, because it really was so much fun. The cub was terrified of Cookie Monster (told me "Cookie Monster is SO BIG") but did a little better with Elmo and Abby, although she still wouldn't get too close!
However life definitely got in the way, and with work, our upcoming move, and well..everything else so I realized something had to go. This year it was the party. But next year I am determined to have one again!

Anyhow, because we still needed to celebrate we went to the Midsommar celebration in Maryland at Carderock Park. They had fun games, plenty of dancing, and a beautiful pole.

We've gone to this celebration twice before and so I knew better than to try to make our crowns there (never enough flowers). I made crowns for the cub and I beforehand and I was pleasantly surprised that she actually wanted to wear hers.

She is familiar with many Swedish songs and dances, primarily thanks to the two Swedish songbooks we have. They are from the Barnkammerboken series and she really, really loves them. So I could see her excited to recognize some of the dances and she kept turning to me and saying, "I like this one!" At one point she grabbed her little friend's hand and they went inside the circle to do their own thing, which was really cute.
But recently I realized I want her to have a few more dresses too, both casual ones for every day and a few nicer ones for church. So I'm setting out to remedy that a little, starting with this blue cotton Sedona dress.

The Sedona dress is a new pattern from Little Lizard King that I helped test for. It's such a quick sew because it's a dolman style (yay, no setting in sleeves!) and no closures. It has a v neck front and the sweetest little scoop in the back.

I was a little nervous while sewing it up that it was going to be too plain, but I ended up absolutely loving it. It has a simple, classic look to it and it's so easy for her to wear and run around it. This type of non-fussy dress is exactly what I wanted for her.
To be honest, I'm not great at sewing with knits. I made this situation worse for myself by buying really cheap knit fabric from Walmart ($1.50/yard) and despite this nightgown costing maybe $2 total, I regretted it. The cheap fabric can be such a headache to sew with!

Adjustments I made: omitted the ties at the shoulders because I didn't want a bunch of ties up near her neck while sleeping and took out a little bit of the fullness in the skirt.

She really likes it. In fact she insisted on wearing it to the bank yesterday, and it looked really cute paired with her sandals and a bow in her hair. Even after taking out some of the fullness in the skirt this has such a huge sweep and is great for twirling! That bottom ruffle is cute but was way too much work for a nightgown. I also tried to do a narrow hem on the ruffle and...let's say either it was a dumb idea or I just still need a lot of practice working with that foot.

I do plan to eventually try this pattern again in woven fabric, and I can actually see myself maybe trying it again in a better quality knit, too. Because it really is a cute nightgown.

This post has been a long time coming, but I'm finally getting it up!

I was so lucky to get to test the Polina Dress for Coffee + Thread. Both versions of the dress are so cute and I knew as soon as I saw the initial line drawings that I wanted to sew it. I will say this dress was definitely a labor of love...getting those ruffles on took time and patience.

I actually based this on a past Janie and Jack dress that I had seen and loved. I was nervous about color blocking a line in on the circle skirt, but once I finally sat down and made myself do it I found that it really wasn't complicated at all. The bodice is from a man's shirt, the skirt is white poplin. Why I thought that a white skirt would be good on a toddler is a good question, but it has actually held up just fine!

This dress was originally for the cub's birthday, but she has worn it a ton since (Easter, to a wedding, Mother's Day, church several times). That circle skirt is great for twirling.

Lots of pictures because, well, birthday. :)

One of the top things on my list to sew for the cub once the warm weather hit were shorts. I want shorts for her that aren't super skimpy or tight, but which are still cute. Twig and Tale just re-released their Pixie Shorts & Pants pattern, and I was lucky to have the chance to sew up a version for the release. I love the flat front on these shorts and the little cuffs on the legs! I tried to show her the little pockets but she hasn't really figured out pant pockets yet.

One of the things I really love about Twig + Tale is the encouragement to recycle and upcycle fabric. There are suggestions right in the pattern of different ways to do that, and I love giving something new life (and being kinder to our environment)! This pattern also has access to some great tutorial videos in case you're a visual learner like me. :)

I used what was previously a man's shirt to make these shorts. The fabric is a cotton/poly blend and is a thicker chambray, so it's a nice weight for shorts.

I made size 18-24 month shorts, no adjustments to the pattern, and added a bow to the front.

This pattern has so many options, and there is also an expansion pack with additional romper, suspenders, and bow add ons. I can definitely see making some corduroy or wool versions in the fall to wear with tights. The bundled pack (with the expansion) can be found here and is 10% off until midnight Monday PST.

We stopped to take some pictures of her in the shorts after dropping Jeff off at work the other day, and she was really unhappy about taking pictures because she knew I had a green smoothie in the car and she really wanted it. It took a bit of work to get her to forget about it and enjoy running around, which is a change from the usual (wanting to run around and not get in the car)! She's crazy about green smoothies right now, which I think primarily is because I let her push the button to blend it all together. She also has a real thing for raw spinach, which she wants to eat with a fork. Just raw spinach. That sounds like a total humble brag, but we just find it really funny and I know that it isn't any huge parenting win on our part and she will probably turn against all green stuff any day. But for now we're eating spinach with forks.
The blossoms were brown and shriveled up, and it looked more like burnt popcorn popping on the tree, which was sad. So although the blossoms were a bit lackluster this year we still were glad to see so many of them survived and bloomed out a week later!

Last year we had a little picnic over at the Arboretum after visiting the blossoms and this year we visited the same tree again. There was another family having a picnic there as well, and they told us they have picnicked there during the blossoms every year for the past ten years! (We must have just missed them last year.) We may adopt their tradition! They shared Japanese tea with us and the cub played ball with their kids. It was a lovely day.

Linneahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13737185842238518224noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2544348616660260011.post-64772221412166647392017-04-03T17:04:00.000-07:002017-06-15T18:30:10.223-07:00A Winter Mara BlouseI feel so boring when I'm writing a post about something I sewed. So here's some human interest...the other day Jeff read the cub "If you Give a Mouse a Brownie" and said to me afterward, "You know, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie is a lot more believable." 😂

I can already see that the Mara blouse pattern is going to be well used around here. I made the panda one for the cub late last summer, and then in the fall I made her one with long sleeves. I didn't take the time to take pictures of her in it until a few weeks ago, but it has been worn a lot.

The one tricky thing about doing long sleeves was that the pattern didn't give measurements for how long the elastic should be that is put into the wrist. I made the wrists a bit snug on her, will have to remember to make them bigger than I think I need next time.

The fabric was from an old shirt, I had the buttons left over from another project and thought they looked so cute. I made the bias tape and piping from the same fabric.

I love how this has a totally different look from the last time I made this pattern. I already have a new Spring/Summer one planned out, too. I love the shape of the shirt and how the tucks in the front give some extra space for her little toddler tummy!

<span style="background-color: #bd081c; background-position: 3px 50%; background-repeat: no-repeat no-repeat; background-size: 14px; border-bottom-left-radius: 2px; border-bottom-right-radius: 2px; border-top-left-radius: 2px; border-top-right-radius: 2px; border: none; color: white; cursor: pointer; display: none; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 11px; font-style: normal; font-weight: bold; line-height: 20px; opacity: 1; padding: 0px 4px 0px 0px; position: absolute; text-align: center; text-indent: 20px; width: auto; z-index: 8675309;">Save<span style="background-color: #bd081c; background-position: 3px 50%; background-repeat: no-repeat no-repeat; background-size: 14px; border-bottom-left-radius: 2px; border-bottom-right-radius: 2px; border-top-left-radius: 2px; border-top-right-radius: 2px; border: none; color: white; cursor: pointer; display: none; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 11px; font-style: normal; font-weight: bold; line-height: 20px; opacity: 1; padding: 0px 4px 0px 0px; position: absolute; text-align: center; text-indent: 20px; width: auto; z-index: 8675309;">SaveLinneahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13737185842238518224noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2544348616660260011.post-72298294713164122602017-02-25T13:53:00.000-08:002017-06-15T18:30:10.247-07:00LLK Dakota Dress with a fur yokeI've fallen behind on blogging, so I'll hurry and put up some of my winter sewing projects before we jump into Spring sewing (the weather is so warm that I'm feeling tons of pressure to get things made!)

I started the year off making the Dakota dress by Little Lizard King. This was my first time working with fur so I was nervous, but it was super easy. I also had to be brave and put a zipper in, which also wasn't nearly as scary as I make it out to be in my mind. I had to shorten the zipper which was an adventure! It turned out okay, although the next time I need to shorten a metal zipper I think I will do a few things a little differently. I made the main dress portion in navy flannel. Nice and soft, though I wish it had been a little thicker (this was shirting).

I like this design a lot. We layered a long white sleeve onesie under it, because of course it was too cold out to be without one.

Overall I think this is such a cute and unique design for a winter dress, and it came together really quickly, too. It's already warming up so quickly here that it feels weird to put her in fur, but we did get quite a few wears in before the temperature started creeping up!
Linneahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13737185842238518224noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2544348616660260011.post-17272987149596171852016-10-27T09:37:00.000-07:002017-06-15T18:30:10.265-07:00Louisa Coat - Compagnie M. I feel so lucky to have been chosen to take part in the blog tour for Compagnie M.'s new pattern, the Louisa Coat. I think Marte's designs are the perfect balance of classic and modern, and they also inspire me to try new things (I made my own piping for this one!) As soon as I saw her first sneak peek photo of the Louisa Coat I was hooked, and every new detail she revealed (the back! the tulip collar!) just made me crazier for it.

I picked up this piece of grey wool (maybe a wool blend?) at the thrift store a while ago for $2.99. It was a little over a yard and perfect for this project. I was worried that perhaps grey was a bit too boring for a toddler coat, and then happened to see it next to a piece of Rifle Les Fleurs fabric in my box and suddenly I knew they belonged together.I didn't have much of the Les Fleurs fabric but I was just able to squeeze out the piping I needed. I lined the inside with a more subtle print - tiny white polka dots on grey. The pattern includes instructions for a little flower to put on the coat, but I swapped ours out for a sailor bow pin out of the same fabric as the piping. Ivory buttons and cuffs gave it the perfect finishing touches.

The cub's chest measurement was closer to the 12 month size on the chart, but I sized up to 18 months so that she can grow into it (instead of out of it!) and so it is a little big on her all over and I'm hoping she can wear it for a long time. I did shorten the sleeves by two inches. It is quite long on her right now, but at the rate she is shooting up I'm thinking come January/February she will fill it out much better.

This was the most complex thing I've ever sewn and I still can't really believe I made it - it's so impressive! I was a little intimidated to start, but read through the whole pattern and realized I could definitely do it. The pattern is written very nicely and the finished product looks so professional - all the seams are enclosed inside and it even has a little hang loop which I love.

Linneahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13737185842238518224noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2544348616660260011.post-60869147675484651322016-10-23T18:01:00.000-07:002017-06-15T18:30:10.281-07:00Plaid Upcycled Janie Lou Dress

A month ago or so I found a nice men's plaid shirt at Kohls on clearance for about $4, and picked it up thinking it could be a fall dress for the cub. It is such a nice double brushed cotton and so soft. It was a size 2XL, so it yielded a lot of fabric.

A boutique in the area carries a line of darling children's clothing from Spain (Mayoral is the brand) and they always have the sweetest little plaid dresses for fall which were my inspiration for this. I used the Little Lizard King Janie Lou pattern which has a nice bodice panel in the center (I love their chevron tuck option and will do that the next time I make the pattern) and the sweetest little cuffs on the sleeves. The pattern came together nicely, I did change it slightly when attaching the skirt and sandwiched the seam between the bodice and lining, purely because I prefer having less of my seams exposed inside.

I'm proud of my plaid matching, especially across the back. I reused the buttons already on the shirt, and even put the tiny ones that were up by the neck on the original shirt onto the cuffs. (I made the cuffs from some navy blue corduroy I had leftover from another project.)

I did have to slightly shorten the skirt because of fabric constraints, and am considering going back and adding a band around the bottom to give her another inch or two. I think it's fine when she's wearing her tights, but she keeps shooting up in height and the extra length would be helpful.

She's worn this several times already! This will be a super photo-heavy post, because despite all my attempts to narrow the pictures down to just a few there are so many I want to share. I suppose everyone should just be grateful that I'm not making you sit down in my living room and watch a long parade of slides...here you can scroll as quickly as you'd like!

We packed so much into our time there and it passed in a bit of a blur. We were lucky to have amazing weather, and many days we could even see blue skies. We generally took the subway everywhere, though we did pack into the car a few times and braved the insane traffic.

Since moving out to the suburbs we have used the baby carrier with Annika a lot less, and she isn't as used to it anymore. We took her out for a quick test walk around the neighborhood, and she seemed to really enjoy it:

To try to appease her we decided to take the stroller to the Summer Palace instead. This meant we ended up doing a LOT of this -

Thank goodness for our super lightweight stroller! I also carried Annika in my arms up all the steps to see the Fragrant Buddha. She wanted me to sing the entire way (The Wheels on the Bus, and she won't accept any repeats on verses) so that was an additional challenge to the climb. I thought about all the days I spend doing Stroller Strides and singing to her while working out - this is what I'd been training for!

The Summer Palace was massive, it was truly amazing. Everything was huge, actually. Forbidden City, The Great Wall, etc. Even the sheer amount of people in China was staggering to me.

A lot of stairs. This is apparently how our family likes to climb them.

Annika slept through many of the sights. Oh well.

Daniel and Holly helped us eat our way through Beijing! We tried hot pot, Chinese noodle, dumplings, Peking duck, Taiwanese, Korean BBQ, and of course some good ol' street vendor food. Did I mention Holly makes fresh bread nearly every morning? We trie a lot of new foods, and the cub learned the word "rice." They seemed to know the best restaurants to eat at for everything, and I feel like we got the full gamut from nice and fancy to the hidden (and delicious) dives. We also went to a cat cafe, where cats wandered through the restaurant while we ate. Our food all had a nice cat motif, as well!

Because everyone asks, yes, the cub did get a fair amount of attention while we there. Less than I expected while wandering around Beijing, but anytime we went to a very touristy location there were always several people wanting to say hi to her and take a picture. Her reaction depended on the day. Most of the time she just ignored them, but there were a few days where she was extremely friendly!

I love this picture. These ladies were so sweet to her, and it was fun to see people playing Tai Chi Ball, especially because we had tried to learn it at the Folk Life Festival a few years ago!

I referenced Around the World in 80 Diaper's guides to seeing Beijing with children quite a bit when planning our trip. I love her rules for traveling with children, and think we'll adopt a lot of them. We definitely found time to play at playgrounds on our trip - and even a little dip in the neighborhood pool. It was fun to do touristy things, but also fun to see how our cousins live and what they normally do.

When we went out to see The Great Wall we went to Gubeikou, which is (supposedly) less touristy and is a less restored section of the wall. We went the night of Moon Festival, which was really neat and the little watertown was buzzing! We stayed at a neat farmhouse just out of the city that Holly found for us. They were so nice and fed us wonderful food that had been produced right there on the farm, including delicious eggplant! It was really fun to get out of the city and see a little more of China.

A few more random pictures:

Jeff wanted to see if he was as flexible as the senior citizens stretching at the Temple of Heaven. He wasn't. But we think Beijing would be a terrific place to retire, because the Temple of Heaven seems to be the ultimate senior center. Dancing, calligraphy, knitting, games, tai chi ball - so many fun things going on on the grounds. He has some time to work on it until we get old and head back there.

I think the cub's favorite part of China were all the stairs in Daniel's house. I made her a few tops for our vacation, and to help take her through until it really cools down for fall -

The first was upcycled from a man's linen shirt I bought at the thrift store. It has the prettiest blue stripes and is 100% linen, which means it wrinkles a ton but is so nice and soft! I loved the fabric so much I actually squeaked out two tops, one for her and one for me.

I used the Oliver + S Ice Cream dress pattern, but made the blouse version. This was my first Oliver + S pattern and I love it, the finishes look so professional. I made her the 6-12 month size.

When I saw the Art Gallery Pandalicious fabrics I knew I wanted to make something for the cub for our big trip to Beijing. I loved the subtle Hidden Panda print, and when I saw Compagnie M.'s Mara blouse pattern I knew it was exactly the feel I was looking for. Compagnie M.'s designs are so timeless and classic, with little details that keep them unique and fun. I went to my sewing class on piping and bias tape the week before tackling this top and that was super helpful - this was my first project with both piping and making my own bias tape and it went smoothly! This top also has a long sleeve option and I plan to make one for fall/winter for A. I made it in size 1.

I did a little embroidery on one little panda and it was so sweet I was tempted to do it on all of them...

She wore this top when we went to the zoo in Beijing to see the pandas - exactly what I pictured while working on it!

Finally, the day before we left I decided to whip up another top for her-which was probably a bit crazy of me (and I know Jeff thought so) but it turned out so cute and is one of my favorite things I've ever sewed her. I used the same gauze fabric I've used for two baby dress gifts, and the little flowers are just so sweet. There are red buttons all up the back of this one which I love, and the sleeves just have the cutest little shape.

I used the Oliver + S Family Reunion dress pattern, made the blouse option and omitted the tab in the front. I again made the 6-12 month size, but added an inch or so to the length. The finishing on this is so nice - the directions up by the shoulders are just excellent.

She wore all of her shirts several times on our trip and a ton over the last few weeks too, since the weather has remained quite warm. It makes me so happy to dress her in them.Linneahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13737185842238518224noreply@blogger.com1
